Important : Speed limit cut by 20km/h from next week

The most important and most crowded streets of Brisbane will see a 20 km / h reduction in the speed limit, following the success of the road safety plan.

The speed limit will be reduced from one of Brisbane's busiest streets starting next week after the accident reduction experience has proved successful.

The speed limit is set to reach 780 meters from Ann Street in the  CBD, stretching from Creek Street to Riverside Expressway, from 60 km / h to 40 km / h on 5 November.

Brisbane City Council will announce the change today and will send the message via e-bulletin boards.

The decision follows the events of the past five years, which have seen 10 serious accidents involving pedestrians along the same road.

It is worth noting that in May, Brisbane mum Anne-Marie Stent died after being hit by a city bus while crossing.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announced a review of road safety in the city in July, calling for a one-year trial of slow speed limits.

The review came after 16 cyclists and pedestrians were killed on the roads of Queensland in the past six months.

Brisbane is famous for having some of the worst traffic in the country's CBD.

“The sad reality is pedestrians are getting more dangerous to themselves and it has a lot to do with mobile phones,” Bishop said.

“Pedestrians are becoming less and less alert and if you combine that with drivers also playing with their phones, the slower you’re going the better.”
